Explore our range of high-performance gas safety instrumentation, controllers, and industrial solenoid valves certified for hazardous locations.
Solenoid valves act as critical actuators in automated system control. Selecting the correct solenoid valve sizing is crucial to achieving optimal flow rate control, avoiding excessive pressure drop, and ensuring the safety of industrial pipelines. Port diameter, internal orifice dimensions, and flow coefficient (Cv/Kv values) directly determine whether a valve can handle specific media flow rates under target pressure drop thresholds.
Under-sizing a valve creates restrictive bottlenecks, triggering system inefficiency and premature coil failure due to excess load. Conversely, choosing an over-sized solenoid leads to high procurement costs, sluggish activation times, and risk of chatter due to insufficient pressure differential. As a specialized OEM manufacturer, we provide customized sizing matrices tailored to specific medium viscosity, pressure levels, and fluid velocities.
To accurately calculate the appropriate valve dimensions, engineers rely on precise formulas integrating flow coefficient parameters:

Navigating global safety rules requires strict adherence to localized directives. Our entire solenoid valve family is engineered and validated to satisfy major international regulatory frameworks:
For multinational gas utilities and engineering procurement companies, sourcing is only the first step. Xinhaosi backs up manufacturing with global technical support and local integration solutions:
Review the implementation standards for sizing and selecting solenoid systems across various demanding operating environments.
In municipal gas networks, high flow volumes require large-sized solenoid valves (e.g., DN50 to DN100) that operate with minimal pressure drop. The valves function as safety interlocks that trip during seismic events or sudden overpressure conditions. Integrated flow sensors and monitoring systems enable operations teams to execute predictive maintenance and identify minor gas leaks before they escalate into emergencies.
Petrochemical refining handles high temperature, high pressure, and corrosive fluids. In these settings, explosion-proof solenoid valves with stainless steel housings and Viton or PTFE seals are standard. Sizing calculations must account for the density and viscosity of the process fluids to prevent cavitation and ensure the valve opens or closes within safety timing window limits.
For homes and multi-family developments, safety systems require compact, cost-effective solutions. Typically, a DN15 or DN20 aluminum or brass solenoid valve is installed at the main gas entry point. The valve is wired directly to a household combustible gas detector. If the detector senses methane or LPG, it outputs a pulse signal that triggers the valve to shut off the gas supply, preventing potential fires or explosions.
To choose the correct size, you need to calculate the flow coefficient (Cv or Kv) based on inlet pressure, allowable pressure drop, gas density, and the maximum volumetric flow rate of the system. Once calculated, match this value with a valve size that has a rated Cv/Kv higher than the target, ensuring it operates within limits without restricting flow.
Line size refers to the connection thread or flange dimension (e.g., a 1/2" NPT or DN15 connection). Orifice size refers to the internal opening diameter through which the gas flows. A valve with a larger line size can have a smaller internal orifice to restrict flow or regulate pressure, so checking both dimensions is necessary.
Pilot-operated solenoid valves use the fluid pressure in the pipeline to help actuate the internal diaphragm or piston. If the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet is too low, the valve will not open or close fully. In low-pressure systems, direct-acting or direct-lift solenoid valves are used instead because they do not require a minimum pressure drop to function.
Seal materials must be chemically compatible with the medium and matched to the system operating temperature. NBR is suitable for standard fuel gases at moderate temperatures. Viton (FKM) offers better resistance to high temperatures and corrosive chemicals, while PTFE is preferred for cryogenic applications or aggressive media.
